WHO WE ARE?
Leone Cycle For Africa is a community based organization, founded in Uganda East Africa. We are a project that uses the little resources we have to help make a big change in the lives of those in need, especially vulnerable children and the youth. We are using our talents, skills, abilities and our love for the sport of cycling to reach out to the needy children and the youth of Africa; starting with the country of Uganda. We believe children have a great potential to be anything if given the opportunity. It is our role and heart desire to bring back a smile on a face of the children one at a time.
MISSION STATEMENT: Bring back a smile serving the undeserved,empowering individuals,families, villages,skill training creating jobs and improve standards of living through bicycling.
LEONE's Story
This organization was founded by Leone Twaha Matovu a 22 year old professional cyclist from Uganda East Africa. Leon was orphaned at the age of 8 due to the Aids disease that claimed his parents and his little sister.
Leone was left in the care of his elder sister who was a 12 year old child also. Leone struggled growing up as he had no body to help him pay for his shelter food, or education,or medical care in case he was sick. He had no one to guide and raise him up as a typical child. His elder sister tried to provide for the house hold through child labor.
For little Leone every day was a struggle and every meal was a gift.
Leone's sister managed to put him through high school where he acquired his Diploma.
As a child Leone was known as an African tornado because he was a child who never stood in one place very long. He started cycling at the age of 17 and by the age of 19 he became a professional cyclist for the Uganda National Team.
Despite his background and hardship he became a somebody from a nobody. He is currently the captain of the Uganda National Cycling Team, has won several races and inspired many young people.
Leone remembers his childhood, his trials, his hardship and in return he is trying to paying forward. He is currently working with community children whose situation resembles his past. He is focused on raising and uplifting the children's talents through sports in the villages of Uganda .
